1911 - In Febuary Atlas Fire Co. was founded and organized by the residence of Atlas. The first apparatus used was a hand drawn hose cart which was housed in a garage on Wood Alley behind the 200 block of West Girard St. ( Around where Jips bar is located today). The First Fire Chief  was David Delago.

   1913 - One of the worst fires of this era occured on Girard street where 6 row homes burned to the ground. The fire was so intence that the assistance of Antracite's horse drawn steam engine was requested.

   1914 - Atlas Fire Co. purchased it's second firehouse on the 200 block of Girard St. ( Still standing today) The building consisted of a Truckroom , Bar , and meeting hall.

   1923 - Atlas purchased it's first engine driven fire truck, which was an American LaFrance pumper. The truck was delivered by rail car and a fellow with the last name of Fenca came along with the apparatus to teach the firefighters how to operate this modern day pumper.

   1934 - A house fire on Columbia Ave. claimed the life of a young girl.

   1940's - A request and proposal for a second fire company in Atlas fell through after only 1 week of operation. The location of this second company was on the 400 block of Columbia Ave.

   1948 - Atlas purchased it's 3rd fire truck which was a Dodge pumper.


   1960 - Atlas purchased it's 4th fire truck which was an International Pumper. This was the beginning of the 2 Engine era in which Atlas still runs with today.

   1970's - Atlas built it's 3rd and current firehouse on the 300 block of Saylor St. the building contained 1 garage, a Bar and banquet hall.

    1971 - 4 Homes Burned to the ground on the 200 block of Girard

   1976- Atlas purchased it's 4th fire truck which was a " SlimeLime" Hahn. ( This Engine is still in service today)

   1980 - March 7th - Fire broke out at 245 East Saylor St. which claimed 1 life (a man) and 12 houses, this fire left 24 homeless

    1980 - Nov 8th - A sever fire broke out at Movement's bowling alley destroying the building.

    1980's - Atlas was donated a Maxim fire engine frome a company outside the Philadelphia area.

   1980's - Fire Broke out in Savitski's Breaker causing severe damage.

   1980's - A second garage bay was erected to the existing firehouse.

   1989 - Atlas purchased it's 5th fire engine which was a KME pumper. The engine replaced the Maxim. ( This engine is in service today)

   1990 - Atlas purchased a small Box Van for the purpose and intent of transporting juinor firefighters to incidents, But it's use grew to carrying a cascade system, lighting and also doubles as a rehab unit.

   1999 - Atlas purchased a bigger box van to replace the smaller van which was in service. This van is in service today and contains a 5k generator,Lighting,Cascade system and much more. and also doubles a a rehab unit.

   2004 - Atlas purchased it's 6th fire engine which is a 1988 Hahn Pumper, which was purchased from West Lawn fire Co. the Engine was bought to replace the outgrown 1989 KME.

   Today, Atlas Fire Co. proudly serves the Villages of Atlas, Diamondtown, Mt. Carmel Estates, and Oak Ridge Estates. With additional first alarm assigments to many neighboring communities. Currently Atlas runs with 2 - 1250 Pumpers and a Support Unit, and all personnell are 100% volunteer.

    This List of information and dates were compiled by George Bornichick, who is the oldest member of the atlas fire company. George was fire chief from the late 1930's to the mid 1960's and was still taking calls up until 2000.
